Ottmar-Friends

Mar 13, 2009

We have a subscription service at last. It's a model I have been considering and writing about for years - since 2004? You can choose to subscribe at $4 per month or $20 per year:1. Every month you can download a high quality music file. Something new or something live or something from my 20 year archive. Most of this music will be exclusive, meaning that the music has never been released or is a preview that will be released at a later time. Well, I say one per month, but for March there are already three free downloads: Jon's Sao Paulo 3.4.1, a special 24 bit/96 kHz audiophile version of This Spring Release 10,000 Butterflies" and a a version of La Luna from a recent rehearsal... 2. In addition to viewing videos you will be able to download most of them. 3. You can view and download any of about 10,000 photos I have on Flickr - in full size. You will have to open a free Flickr account to do that, but that takes only seconds. 4. You can log in and read my private journal and, if you like, you can participate in commentary and discussions with other subscribers. Since only subscribers can read and comment we should be able to enjoy a spamless environment. :-) 5. You can open a free Twitter account and follow my protected (private) Twitter feed.Oh, and you won't see any advertising anywhere. I have thought about it a bunch, and decided that I really don't like seeing ads on every RSS feed and blog out there on the Interwebs. We will make it work without such visual and mental clutter. I will make some new recordings that will only be released to the subscribers. I see Ottmar-Friends as my overall publisher, a big bowl into which I can place content of any kind. To sign up, visit http://ottmarliebert.com/backstage. I look forward to sharing my experiences through music, photography and writing with you.

The Scent of Light

Feb 03, 2009

John Diliberto's review for amazon.com Amazon.com: The Scent of Light: Ottmar Liebert + Luna Negra: Music With one of his two 2008 releases, The Scent of Light, Nouveau Flamenco pioneer Ottmar Liebert opens up his music into horizons that are new, yet also recall his 1993 CD, The Hours Between Night + Day. Like that album, many of the songs here are inspired by Liebert's travels, and similarly, rather than fiery flamenco, he takes a more introspective path with subtle, spacious arrangements. Ambient music, which he explored in the 1990s on Opium, remains an influence in Liebert's music. He uses electronics to gently shape the acoustic space around his guitar and band with reverse percussion echoes on "Firelight," call and response guitars on "The River: Writing in Water," and a tamboura drone and tabla on the haunting "Candlelight." Mellotron flutes and reverse guitar bring "Moonlight," the most arresting melody on the album, to a haunting close as it dissolves into birds and wind. The centerpiece of The Scent of Light is "Silence, No More Longing." It's an 11 minute excursion that builds from a solo flamenco alap to multi-tracked guitars adding ambient electronics, bass, percussion, and finally unleashing a quiet electric storm from guitarist Stephen Duros. Like the album, it takes you from a world of interior ruminations to exterior vistas. - John Diliberto

Mariachi Bullitt

Jan 17, 2009

Introducing the Mariachi Bullitt: Walked to Mellow Velo this morning, before the roads became to muddy, and picked up Clockwork. Harry (of Larry Vs Harry) shipped the bike with a 22T gear wheel, instead of 20T, and David added a chain-tensioner and as a result I was able to ride the bike up the hills. Could not resist taking a photo with my guitarcase in the box. (((I used Toy-Camera on the iPhone))) Ready for Peak Oil?

ottmarliebert.com

Oct 26, 2008

What will happen when the humans have disappeared? Like any road, building, or book, this home page will crack, decay, and surrender to the elements of nature if left unattended for a period of time. (Give it about 9 minutes.) When Canton and I started working on ideas for a new ottmarliebert.com homepage this Spring, I felt I had to think about the characteristics of a website - as compared to printed material, e.g. books. A book smells of paper and ink - a web site does not smell at all. A book is tactile and my interaction with it involves touch - a web site is not tactile... one has to use an intermediary, the mouse, to interact. (((like reading a book that's in another room and having to use robotic arms to turn the page))) A book makes sounds: turning the page, flattening a paperback to stay open to a certain page, flicking through pages to find where one left off, folding over a corner to mark a certain passage... - a web site often features annoying sounds that make us reach for the mute button...(((like playing "Barcelona Nights" as soon as we landed on www.lunanegra.com))) What are, for me, the useful characteristics of a web page? It can be in many places at the same time - actually everywhere, pretty much instantly. It can make use of time in a way that books cannot. And, maybe most importantly, a web site can link to stuff. Have you EVER checked whether an author actually quoted somebody correctly? It involves noting the quote and checking the footnotes and then going out and finding the book in question... I have NEVER actually done that - but on a web page it is easy to follow the link and discover the origin of the quote. Time and linking... As a result links are all red on the new web site - they are as obvious as possible since the web is all about linking... Then Canton had a long and apparently very vivid dream about plants taking over the planet. The CO² content in the air had become too high and forced humans to seek shelter underground, and while they were gone from the surface plants had gone wild and even evolved intelligence... I liked this for several reasons. The first reason is that we don't have to save planet Earth in the coming decades... we have to save us, the humans dwelling on said planet. The planet will be fine if humans go the way of dinosaurs - and possibly disappear as quickly as the dinosaurs did. Development moves upward and towards complexity and in a few million years another race of human-like creatures might occupy earth. Or another planet. The universe won't care about this little setback. What's another few million or billion years! Something new will rise from the primordial slime eventually, because evolution is a one-way street, toward complexity. The second reason is that depicting time and decay is a way of showing time, and music is all about time. So, Canton went to work and we created this homepage. You can watch the changes unfold in about nine minutes (((a veritable eternity in internet-time, where attention usually last about 15 seconds))) or you can find an Easter Egg that will make it all happen in just two minutes. Enjoy. Related Links: The Long Now Clock The Long Now Foundation The World Without Us 15,000 Year Tour of Manhattan What Would Disappear? Thursday Evening

Sep 26, 2008

Photos by Peter from the Ampelos Winery in Lompoc. Later in the evening Matthew Schoening came and we played together for about an hour. One of the many wines we drank was a 1993 Sammarco Castello dei Rampolla, a Super Tuscan and one of my favorites.
