Yesterday, while improvising, I played some music on my guitar that was… well, what WAS THAT?
It was like the late night reception of a radio transmission from an unknown country. As I became aware of what was unfolding I was tempted to take the guitar to the studio to record, but I also knew that it would be better to keep playing this transmission and, perhaps, to become more familiar with it. Maybe the sounds would lodge in some of my memory cells and also create some muscle memory.
I don’t know how likely it is but I’ll give it a shot in the studio this afternoon, to try to re-create the transmission.
Walking, I can almost hear the redwoods beating. And the oceans are above me here, rolling clouds, heavy and dark. It is winter and there is smoke from the fires. It is a world of elemental attention, of all things working together, listening to what speaks in the blood. Whichever road I follow, I walk in the land of many gods, and they love and eat one another. Suddenly all my ancestors are behind me. Be still, they say. Watch and listen. You are the result of the love of thousands.
– Linda Hogan
You are the result of the love of thousands. I love that. If we imagine humanity in four dimensions we might see a long worm of DNA manifesting in the multitudes, changing, aquiring, individual experience distilled into genetic memory, winding itself through our entire history.
I am zeroing in on Thursday, 10 December, as the next performance on Twitch.
I am making bread today and thought about bread as a teacher. We are such a result driven culture that when we do x and y we always expect result z.
Sourdough is like life in the sense that sometimes shit happens that we can’t control. A couple of years ago I had a starter die for no apparent reason. I had leaven work exceptionally well one week and hardly at all other weeks. For no reason that I could see.
To work with starter is to figure out a way to deal with life. Maybe those are obvious observations but in my case I found them to be invaluable.
