Leave talent spotting to the suits!

Leave talent spotting to the suits, says EMI boss | News | guardian.co.uk Music
In a stinging attack on the 260 A&R men employed by EMI, he said: “The power and the decision has sat with the A&R man, who is someone who gets up late in the day, listens to lots of music, goes to clubs, spends his time with artists and has a knack of knowing what would sell.”
Hands added: “What we are doing is taking the power away from the A&R guys and putting it with the suits – the guys who have to work out how to sell music.”

How many months before EMI will be for sale again?

I enjoy watching this VC move about the music industry like a bull in a china shop. He does not understand the relationships that were established over decades. The A&R person is the contact point between two worlds. Higher Octave did not have A&R and I hated talking to the suits, because they didn’t get it and they didn’t speak my language, whereas my A&R person at Epic Records was somebody I could relate to, strange as he was…

I suspect the saga at EMI will continue to be entertaining to watch.

Few “suits” know music. There has to be a go between the corporate world and the humanistic world of the musician—someone who understands people and what real people will love to listen to. Really, EMI has to get it together one day we hope.
