Earth Wobble

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The deadly Asian earthquake may have permanently accelerated the Earth’s rotation – shortening days by a fraction of a second – and caused the planet to wobble on its axis, U.S. scientists said on Tuesday.

Thanks Carol.

Makes sense I guess since the earth’s rotation depends on the moon and the tides. My prayers really go out for everyone affected by this.

Well, Eric, the moon doesn’t really play much into this acceleration–don’t let the name “tidal wave” fool you. The earthquake and waves were caused by plate tectonics, not the moon, and although the moon plays a role in slowing down the Earth’s rotation naturally, the earthquake’s effect on rotation is pretty much unrelated.

The death toll’s rising, the numbers are just astonishing, can you even begin to imagine what 80,000+ people, just gone, must be like? It’s just…
